Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Roots- Alex Hailey’s Groundbreaking Book and Ministries

Written by Robby Thomas

I recently had the honor of attending a momentous event at the West Charleston Library in Las Vegas commemorating the 50th anniversary of Roots, Alex Haley’s award-winning book and miniseries that traced his lineage back to Africa.

Its legacy cannot be overstated—it captured the attention of a nation that was both riveted and deeply moved. For nearly two and a half centuries, slavery systematically stripped Americans of African descent of their heritage, cultural connection, and identity. In a nation built on the backs of enslaved Africans, generations were left with a profound void in belonging.

Haley’s historic journey tracing his family roots to The Gambia changed everything. Roots became a cultural turning point—giving credence and impetus to the term "African American." Millions were able to see themselves in a new light, sparking a powerful awakening about ancestral origins and identity. In Haley’s story, we saw our own: the trauma, the resilience, and the possibilities.

During the event, Alex Haley’s grandson, Bill Haley Jr., shared that his grandfather never expected Roots to achieve such monumental success. In fact, at the time of his passing, Alex Haley’s speaking calendar was booked up to two years in advance.

The evening also featured a special presentation by Nevada Congressman Steven Horsford, who read an official Congressional citation honoring event sponsors Guy Dawson and Bill Haley Jr. of The Alex Haley Roots Foundation for their dedication to keeping this history alive.

Roots didn’t just enlighten Black America; it provided a powerful lesson to the nation and the world on the vital importance of telling one’s story truthfully and authentically. Five decades later, its impact continues to resonate just as strongly today.
